Artist Statement
In his series, Symbols, artist David Stein investigates the definition of language and how our perceived understanding can be reimagined through the creation of his own artistic vocabulary. Through his new visual lexicon, he challenges the viewer to reconsider how the meaning behind the written word can be transformed when abstracted into geometric shapes. Consisting of shapes and symbols, Stein’s work is informed by one of humanities earliest known discoveries of communication, hieroglyphics. He explores the limitations of modern language and asks the viewer to deconstruct the inherent link between language and the human experience. Through this thought provoking body of work, he oscillates between form and feeling referencing themes introduced in early modernism such as Dada and the Avant-Garde. As a viewer, one is left questioning how language can change when presented in new forms. How does language connect us to one another and what is lost in translation?
